We are super excited for the Dark Sky Burial show at The Underworld, and the fact that this debut show is going to be live streamed across the world on the Hotel Radio platform is a total honour... We'd like to start by asking you a about the inspiration behind Dark Sky Burial and how it all came about...?
SHANE EMBURY: I have been wanting to create a project like DSB I guess for 20 + years - Being a big fan of experimental and soundtracks music - Napalm's touring schedule always took priority I guess but around 2018 I started to use time away on tour to create ideas and basic structures on my laptop, the name of the project and track titles ideas inspired and based on how I was seeing my life at that point
HOT RAD: We noticed the Facebook page for DSB was created in 2018 and the debut 'De Omnibus Dubitandum Est' was released in April 2020. What effect did the pandemic have on the process here, and did it in any way speed up the release or was that always the plan?
SE: After few years it started to take shape with the music as I would record tracks of short loops with the intention of expanding them when the time became available - the pandemic suddenly gave me time for Dark Sky to become a reality and also the escape I needed from time to deal with suddenly being home all the time
HOT RAD: Yeah the reset afforded was possibly one of the few positives to try and take from the whole thing. This topic possibly also leans into how SciFi, Horror and dark movies are obviously a source of inspiration on the DSB tracks. Are there any particular books or movies that have really paved the way for sounds of Dark Sky Burial?
SE: Initially with the first album I would say Lucio Fulci and John carpenter movies - I love the band Coil and the way they always created tension… since the first album I have 4 albums ready to be released and the music has progressed in some ways and become more involved I am, very inspired by the books of Carl Jung
HOT RAD: Cool so plenty more to look forward too! With that in mind, are there any plans for a physical release of the project to date, in particular a vinyl release?
SE: I am hoping to have a limited edition numbered Lathe cut double Vinyl of the first album in time for the show which will come with a special numbered certificate also and as time progresses the second album…lots of ideas but not rushing
HOT RAD: And we're offering one of those vinyls to the top tipper on the live stream.. sweet (shameless plug)! We've heard Carl Stokes from Cancer is involved in the live show. Who else is performing alongside you on stage in Dark Sky Burial and what can we expect?
SE: Yes he is - Carl and I have been long time friends and have rekindled our friendship of late - we are very much into similar ideas and themes so this will put me at ease a little since it's our first show. Also John Cooke from Corrupt Moral Altar, who also plays in Napalm Death, will be with me will be adding some subtle guitar drones - as its our first we're still mapping out to some degree what we want to do but some spontaneous energy will also come into play I feel also.
HOT RAD: So with the world exiting lockdown (hopefully), and as restrictions ease touring looks to be resuming... We see Napalm Death is planning to head to the States in September with Gwar, Eyehategod & Madball. Would other touring plans such as these make Dark Sky Burial shows a slightly more rare occurrence and how do you intend to balance DSB and your other bands?
SE: Being away from the intense touring schedule I am used to with napalm has given me a lot of time to think on what I want to focus on, and whilst Napalm has been my touring life since I was 19 I intend on fulfilling my personal projects all that more - Dark Sky Burial is incredibly important to me at this point in my life - I don't see the need to tour as insanely as I once did... we will see……
